The Gospel according to Cassidy & Chris

I just spent a week away with my niece and nephew in Tahoe. Now I LOVE Tahoe. It's majestic there. Vast mountains, crystal clear waters, pine scent wafting everywhere.

But what I really love is it affords me 7 whole days with my niece and nephew.

Priceless.

I often think on times away like this, God arranges little events and moments to create a parable of sorts for me to really "get it." The way He sees, feels, and loves me.

On the trip, my nephew Chris kept creating little adventurous scenarios for us, "Auntie Sue....the shadooooows. The GIANT," grabbing his red flashlight in tow and my hand we scurry off to find the giant and destroy him...together. He wants me to come along but what he really wants is to be the hero and save me.

My niece Cassidy has a delightful curiosity and such a kind disposition about her you can't help but want to bottle her up. Seriously. I could use a dose of her awe, wonder, and joyful delight every now and then (ok hourly).

When I walk in the room it seems there is this boundless delight of, "Suuuuuuuuuuuusie....oh (cuddle, cuddle)." It never gets old. All I want to do is get away with her and enter her world, regardless of what that involves: watching Toy Story II (once, twice, ok 7 times!), playing a game, swimming for hours in the pool, even sleeping...I just want to be with her. See how she's experiencing her world--What she likes. What she doesn't. Things she's excited about. Afraid of.

It's rather mysterious and mundane the whole exchange. Like something in me realizes on one level this is about an auntie with her niece and nephew having fun, but on another level a significant kingdom transference is taking place.

The vertical relationship takes me up to the horizontal...Ohhhhhh, this is what YOU feel, Lord. This is how you see us. And how much you long for me to "just be" with you, share my life with you, and know how much I'm loved.

And I miss it.

A lot.

You long to sit with me. Listen to me. Talk to me. Share in it with me.

All those feelings I feel towards those kiddos. The generosity in my heart to give to them abundantly (and when I don't, like telling them it's time for bed, it's because I think it's best for them). The delight when each decides to spend time with me or wants me to share in something their doing. The gift of getting to watch them learn and grow.

You feel those things toward me.

It never ceases to astound me.

Probably because I so often get it wrong. I miss his generous, gracious, simple devotion to sharing life with me. I am so caught up in "Do you have a job for me? Where is this story going? Tell me what's next." I miss the Giver. He's got it taken care of--my focus on the urgent, keeps me from the now...Him. Not only does he see my urgent, He's got it taken care of...everything that's His is mine...and how much he longs for me to curl up in his lap and believe it."

"A father is delighted when his little one, leaving off her toys and friends, runs to him and climbs into his arms. As he holds his little one close to him, he cares little whether the child is looking around, her attention flitting from one thing to another, or just settling down to sleep. Essentially the child is choosing to be with her father, confident of the love, the care, the security that is hers in those arms. Our prayer is much like that. We settle down in our Father's arms, in his loving hands. Our mind, our thoughts, our imagination may flit about here and there; we might even fall asleep; but essentially we are choosing for this time to remain intimately with our Father, giving ourselves to him, receiving his love and care, letting him enjoy us as he will. It is very simple prayer. It is very childlike prayer. It is prayer that opens us out to all the delights of the kingdom." (Brennen Manning, Ragamuffin Gospel)
"I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." (John 6:35)

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

Before he was my dad, he had a daddy.

My Grandpa always made me feel so special and cherished. He wasn't a far off distant Grandpa, rather an involved and interested-in-my-world kind of guy. He was sensitive, kind, generous, and playful (even willing to bear with my Wonder Woman obsession circa 5 ) These are some of the things I'm thankful for about him and some of what I can see he passed onto my dad...

And my Dad took what his dad imparted to him and made it his own.

Dad, thanks for always encouraging me to buzz about and offer my little life to the world (believing maybe it's not that little after all, but could bless and help people).

You are my #1 fan and I am forever grateful that you have built into me kindness, sensitivity, care, a "full of life" heart, a teacher's concern and care, and a vision to go after what you love. These are things you have taught me for sure but mostly just modeled through your daily life.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY DADDY-O!

Happy Monday!

Here's to Monday!

May there be S * T * A* R *S in your eyes and glimmers of hope to guide your days. (ok, not glimmers rather giant beams!)

p.s. I wrote this and scheduled it to post prior to what transpired over the weekend. I need to hear what I wrote as my dad went to the hospital Friday for two nights with intestinal problems and my nephew broke his leg Saturday in a fluke accident!? Praying for a healing, God's gracious love, and a restorative week for the whole Shaw Family.

That sweet little face...

Friday Arts: Family Summers

I did this mixed media piece 2 years ago, just a couple months before I packed up my room and drove the moving truck back home to the Central Coast. I'd been gone 10 years and the time just felt right.

It was the beginning of June, my favorite time of year, and summer was in the air. My heart lingered back to old memories....

. . . long summer days at the Foxenwoods Country Club swimming and laying out for hours by the poolside

. . . enjoying Santa Maria world renown strawberries with spongy shortcake and whipped cream!

. . . eating grossly oversized scoops of ice cream dripping down the cone.

. . . Pine trees and emerald green waters reflecting the cool calm water of Lake Tahoe on family vacations.

And all these memories involved family.

The little art doodling was a reminder to me that I was making a choice to move toward family. Sure there was a cost leaving friends and a big city, but the rewards and the new memories made were gonna be worth it.

So now it's early June once again, 2 years later. The nostalgia still lingers here, but new memories are being born.

Some involve places of old, we'll be going back to Tahoe in July.

Some are new, Vancouver this weekend!

But you know what? It's not necessarily the big family events or vacations that stand out, though memorable, it's the little things...

Unexpectedly dropping in on my niece and nephew to be greeted by ecstatic little faces, fogging up the front window, "Auntie Sue! Auntie Sue!"

It's my Mom & Dad waving me good-bye and blowing kisses each and every time I drive away (much like my Grandma and Grandpa did when I was a little girl).

It's having my Aunt Diane drop in on a whim at Starbucks just because she loves me, misses me (cause she hasn't seen me in over a week), and can't wait to catch up!

It's driving with my sister Katie on errands and actually enjoying the experience cause I get some mommy in-action time with her. Here is my little sis, all grown up, savoring the little joys (and moments of annoyed aggravation) with me and her kids.

It's getting a text from my brother Michael and his wife Farah, that they are in town "toodling" around and let's meet up.

It's my lingering walks at night scouting out neighborhoods envisioning where my sister Lisa and her hubby may one day live with their precious baby girl.

Ahhhh....Summer Days.

Oh and by the way, I've had a pint of of strawberries a week!

So, how are you gonna enjoy your family and friends this summer?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEAUTIFUL GIRL!

Cassidy...

I cannot believe it has been 5 years since that special day in my life when your mommy called and said "it's time."

Watching your little head fighting to come into the world, I felt so blessed to be a part of your grand entrance into life.

Your mommy and daddy were so expectant.

And now your 5! 5?

You are such a delightful, kind little girl. Auntie Sue loves playing with you, learning from you, dancing with you, dressing in pink with you, doing our nails and make-up at our special sleepovers, and stealing away time "with just the girls."

I love you, Cass! HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY!!!!
